The anime project will start with Crimson Cross set for a 2016 release during the run of Season 2 of the show.

Aniplex of America, Hasbro Studios, Hollowfox Entertainment and Production I.G. LLC licensed the series for an english dub by Bang Zoom! Entertainment with a worldwide simulcast release.

About the Project Edit

With the announcement of the show, Montalvo was in talks about having an anime spin-off after the success of the Anthro Bunraku anime film. He expressed that it might be an anime-styled alternate canon to the cartoon series as similar to Equestria Girls being an alternate canon to Friendship Is Magic.

Atsushi Nishigori confirms to return to his buddies at Studio Trigger since he worked on the final episode of Kill la Kill, and Nishigori will be the series' director and animation character designer with Hiroyuki Imaishi as planning supervisor and Yoh Yoshinari as main mechanic designer and general animation director. Nishigori stated, "With me reuniting with former Gainax members at Studio Trigger and collaborating with Production I.G, It feels like FLCL all over again, this time, mixing it with Kill la Kill, Gurren Lagann and Sengoku Basara." Montalvo was a fan of Nishigori's since Gurren Lagann and Panty and Stocking. Kazuki Nakashima is confirmed to helm the story and write the first two episodes and the final one with Montalvo as story supervisor and Masahiko Otsuka as story editor. Scriptwriters for the 12 episodes include Nakashima, Yasuyuki Muto (The Rolling Girls, Gundam Unicorn), Hideyuki Kurata (Samurai Flamenco, Hellsing Ultimate), Ichiro Okouchi (Azumanga Daioh, Valvrave the Liberator), Hiroshi Onogi (Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Doraemon) and Michiko Yokote (xxxHolic, Shirobako). As of 2015, Nishigori will cooperate with the series' composition and steps up to become the chief director while Takafumi Hori remains director.

For the music, Hiroyuki Sawano, Yuki Kajiura and TeddyLoid are confirmed to compose the OVA's music and is overseen by Aniplex, Starchild Records and Flying Dog. Montalvo stated that the opening theme songs will be original ones written originally by him.

It is stated that it's a Japanese-American production formed by Aniplex, Hasbro Studios, Bandai Visual and Hollowfox Entertainment. Aniplex of America will oversee the licensing, while Hollowfox distributes the series and Hasbro Studios co-produces it. The english dub, set for a worldwide release the same time as Japan, will be produced by Bang Zoom! Entertainment. However, the original voices for Twilight Sparkle (Tara Strong), Applejack (Matt Hill), Jasper Geronimo (Aaron Montalvo), Discord (John De Lancie) and Trevor Devall (Iron Will) reprise their roles respectively due to their residence in the United States, while some of the cast from the Bang Zoom dub of ECS and the AB movie will reprise their roles. Series' executive producer and co-producer Avi Arad will be involved as an executive producer alongside Mitsuhisa Ishikawa and Hiroaki Matsuura.
